Perfect Match

Words Fail Us
Hummer propaganda aimed at kids through McDonald's Happy Meals

Sometimes a story comes along that so perfectly captures a culture's pathologies that it should be put in a time capsule, so future generations ... oh, right, there won't be any future generations. It seems that, according to fast-food behemoth McDonald's, this is a "Hummer of a Summer." A new series of TV and radio ads depict happy families on their way to fatten their children and clog their arteries at McDonald's in GM's gas-guzzling Hummer. When they arrive, soon-to-be-obese boys can choose from eight different toy Hummers with their Happy Meal (happily, girls can learn their proper gender roles from Polly Pocket fashion dolls). Charlie Miller of Environmental Defense thinks it's kind of a bummer of a summer: "Anything that sends a message to kids that these are the cool vehicles to buy is the wrong message." At today's prices, it costs about $96 to fill up the gas tank of a Hummer H2 -- but don't worry, a double cheeseburger's only a buck.

I was on a bus in Dublin, CA once (don't axe....) and there were these three 12- or 13-year-olds a few seats in front of me being all dumb and stuff, and the bus passed by a Cadillac lot and one of the girls said "Oooo, the Cadillac Escalade is my dream car. That's the car I want to have when I turn 16. A black one, they are so hot!!" I couldn't resist, so I said "A black one would be nice. How many miles per gallon does it get?" She said she didn't know, so I continued with "Why do you like Escalades so much, why do you think they're so hot?" and she said she didn't know. Unfortunately I think sh*t like this is working....

I saw two Hummer commercials last night. I think it was on USA or something (during Law and Order: Criminal Intent reruns).

One was proudly announcing the fact that the H3 gets a whopping 20 m.p.g.!! Yay!! A whole 20 miles per gallon!!

The other was about how the H3 starts at $30K. Great, now even ignorant people who can't afford a Hummer like tony can possibly obtain one for two months until they can't make the payments anymore.

Both commercials ended ironically with an image of the Earth.

The EPA List's a Hummer H-2's Approximated Mileage at:

                14 MPG City
                19 MPG Highway-Variable

PITIFUL "MPG" for ANY Arrogant statement of personal stupidity.
Hummer H-2's are little more than Gussied-Up Chevrolet Taho's with a Hummerlike Body Shell.
Just More "Garbage" from General Motors!

Well, to their possible credit, the commercial did make the 20 m.p.g. claims for the H3, not the H2.

I saw Hummer cologne for men at this hair and cosmetics store yesterday. It smelled awful. I was like "Why would anyone want to smell like a Hummer?" and my roommate smelled it and said "Why would anyone want to smell like stupidity?" Touché dear roommate, touché.

                  Just for informationa purposes only:
If General Motors doesn't get it's SHIT together soon, and start building a QUALITY Vehicle it may just find itself going the way AMC did!
Consumer Reports and even JD Power and Associates listed GM Vehicles in their "worst" category for NINE YEARS Straight!
Personally...I wouldn't buy ANY "American Made Vehicle" becuase 98% of them are made to "look flashy and awesome" on the showroom floor, but deteriorate RAPIDLY within the first five years. ANY Vehicle made today, should be of a quality to last MORE than five years.
As an example: I currently drive a 1989 Toyota Camry V-6.It still looks new..and runs and drives like New,even with 200:000 Miles on it(It also gets better MPG than any GM product,in the midsize category) try having todays Chevys,Ford's or Chryslers last 16 years!...FORGET IT!

jake, for fun i looked up the gas mileage statisitics for a 1989 camry v-6 and compared it with the 2006 statistics for midsize vehicles:
                    www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymo...mry.shtml

                    www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/FEG2...icles.pdf

i found the comparisons interesting. according to the site, your car gets 19/24 mpg for the v-6. not only do the stats prove you wrong but they illustrate how mediocre the gas mileage is on high end models of cars such as bmw, audi, volkswagon, mercedes benz and saab. the gm family faired pretty well.

Funny that the EPA states that.
I recently made a 5 hour trip to the Canadian Border from Tacoma(all highway) and I used the gallonage and the Miles traveled on my re-settable trip odometer and got a whopping 29MPG.
My V-6 becuase it is Japanese Technology gets better MPG than ANY General Motors cars in the mid-size wagon V-6 category. Check out ALL GM mileage charts(for the Model year 1989)NOT 2006, and see it for yourself.
GM was really into making CRAP for vehicles from 1980 to 1995! Some of the WORST Model years in the Company's History!

*And they arent "Much Better" today either!

General Motors 1989 "Celebrity Wagon V-6" was "supposedly" Comparable to my 1989 Toyota Camry LE wagon V-6. Not only did the Celebrity do worse in estimated MPG, the cars repair record is a "Total disaster" for that model Year. even the PAINT Peeled off the roof of the car from 89 to 94.
General Motors has become synonymous with "Piece Of Junk",joining the other two American Vehicle Manufacturers FORD and Damler/Chrysler.

i think it's great that your car gets good gas mileage. and i'm willing to bet that not only meeting but exceeding the estimated mpg is attributed to your good driving habits and not the fact that it's a japanese engine. also, why would i check the mileage charts for all 1989 vehicles? you were comparing your car to gm models of today so that's why i looked 'em up......to verify your assertion. i'm not defending the gm family of cars, just addressing that one point you were trying to make. but i'm also interested in hearing what you have to say about the mediocre gas mileage stats for the high end cars that i mentioned.

Good driving habits do indeed make a HUGE difference in what a car gets for its MPG.
I usually set mine in Cruise Control for the speed limit Posted. In this mode, the cars computer is electronically fuling the engine, the manual accellerator(gas pedal) isn't being used,so there is less than a 3% variance in acceleration. This accounts for my Camry achieving the highest MPG during all-highway long distance drives.
There are some(Mostly japanese) manufactured Luxury Cars that get excellent MPH.
The Lexus GS 300 V-6 for example,is an ALL Options Luxury sport sedan. This Car gets an honest 23 MPG City, and 29MPG Highway. Very respectable considering the weight and level of options. Not all "luxury Boats On Wheels" have to acheive such crappy MPG as Cadillacs,Lincoln's,Mercede's and BMW's. These "Luxury Class" Cars are among the poorest in fuel consumption,as are nearly ALL 'mid and full size' SUV's.
